Winner of the Girls’ Singles event at the Funchal Junior Open in Madeira on Thursday 2nd September 2010, Japan’s 17 year old Kasumi Ishikawa announced her intentions of being present in the Indian city of Hyderabad during the first week of November for the ITTF Junior Circuit Finals.
She succeeded in impressive style and enters the ITTF Junior Girls’ Standings at no.26 with 1,250 points.
Now, the Japanese teenager, who was an integral member of the Japanese team that won bronze in the Women’s Team event at the Liebherr World Team Championships in Moscow in May, is en route across the Atlantic Ocean to the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador.
Hot Favourite
Kasumi Ishikawa will play in the Ecuador Junior Open where, as in Funchal, she is the boiling hot favourite to win the Girls’ Singles title; not wishing to tempt fate but should she succeed, she will move to 2,500 points on the Girls’ Singles Standings and climb into sixth place, one ahead of Hong Kong’s Lee Ho Ching.
Mathematically Safe
Catching the leaders is a different proposition; they are away and clear; Singapore’s Isabelle Li, Slovakia’s Barbora Balazova and Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut occupy the top three positions and they can book their flights to Hyderabad.
They are mathematically safe.
Same Scenario
Meanwhile, in the Boys’ Standings, it is very much the same scenario; the top three did not play in Funchal but are home and dry.
Slovakia’s Samuel Novota leads the field followed by Japan’s Asuka Machi and the Czech Republic’s Pavel Sirucek and like the leading trio of girls, they have fulfilled the requisite of competing in two continents.
A Visit to Santiago Needed
It is a qualification that Niklas Matthias, the winner of the Boys’ Singles crown in Funchal, has also met; he is now in 12th place on the Standings, a chance to compete in Hyderabad is still open but to make sure of an invitation, he must travel to Santiago for the Chile Junior Open later this month.
A place in Hyderabad might just be a step too far.
