Table tennis coaching - Coach's duties

Champions are born but also they are created. You are wrong if you believe thatits easy to make a champion. But also it's not as difficult as it seems. The hard work is the basic factor of success but it's not the only thing. How can you improve your abilities in such a dcomplex sport as table tennis? The answer is, with more complex and difficult training, trying to adapt the playing in tournaments during a training session, with psychological training and specific tactical and physical training.

Most of the people who knows the sport, believe that the best results can be done only through a good coach. The players who trained alone are very rare nowdays. To be a coach is a professional job as if you were a proffesional player. Both have very specific duties. The coach sometimes has to do more than one things to reach to a desired successful team level. It's very important to love his job to make it a part of himself. Otherwise it's very difficult to work for ever. However it's not right to believe that the coach is a magician. The first duty of a coach is to create the nessesary contact with his players in order to have the desired results. The mutual co-operation has to be built only if the players has complete trust to the coach's advises and believe that they will have the expected good results.

The good coaches doesn't speak too much but they show their work on the ""table"". They listen their palyers carefully and they try to solve the players' problems. In that way they can understand the influence of their work upon their players. A clever coach always analyze the positive point of their players and tries to make them even better. On the other hand he has to eliminate the players' weaknesses. The coach doesn't impose a style of play to the player but he guides him and show him how to play. The player is responsible to follow coaches' orders and make them reality. It's impossible to compare two coaches because they are ""artists"". All of them have something unique, as an artist have. So, for that reason the only parameter we have in order to compare two coaches is the results they have during their coaching career. he coach has to know the pedagodical principles and critical thoughty to analyse the results. Is has to be calm and ready to overcome the obstacles during a match and well informed to take the responsibility in any situation. He has to try not to change the personality of his player but to respect him.

Courtecy of Nikos Kostopoulos, Ex-Head Coach of Men's Greek Table Tennis Team
