The stylish Jose-Miguel Ramirez of Guatemala was the one casualty of note in the Men’s Singles event at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San German, Puerto Rico on Thursday 29th July 2010.
Seeded no.4, he was beaten in six games by the hard working Colombian Alex Echavarria, a player who a few years ago spent time in England in an effort to hone his skills.
Certainly, the Colombian gave his all and he set a new record.
New Record
He knocked over more court surrounds than any other player in the whole competition as he sped about the court; three surrounds at one go was certainly impressive by the Colombia kamikaze pilot.
Looked Ahead
However, great credit must go to Alex Echevarria.
He did what all great players do; he resigned defeat to history and looked to the future.
Group Defeat
In the group stage of proceedings he had lost to Trinidad and Tobago’s Dexter St Louis and had progressed to the main draw in runners up spot. In the main draw he excelled.
Seeded no.10, he defeated Puerto Rico’s Hector Berrios, Josue Donado of El Salvador and then Jose-Miguel Ramirez to book his place in the penultimate stage and guarantee a medal.
Last Laugh
Furthermore he had the last laugh; Dexter St Louis was beaten by Mexico’s Jude Okoh in round two who one round later suffered at the hands of top seed, the Dominican Republic’s Lin Ju.
Semi-Finals
At the semi-final stage Lin Ju meets third seed, Venezuela’s Jonathan Pino whilst Alex Echevarria confronts second seed, Mexico’s Marcos Madrid.
In the round of the last eight Jonathan Pino defeated colleague Marco Navas whilst Marcos Madrid ended the hopes of Lin Ju’s colleague, Juan Vila.
