This stroke is used by good offensive players to return a forehand or backhand topspin. It requires a high level of technical skill and neuromuscular coordination. The "key" for the right playing of this stroke is to hit the ball at the correct angle and at the precise moment required.
The ideal position to play this stroke is approximately 40cm (15.7in) away from the table. The body position is similar to the basic stance. As the ball comes and before it bounces, the player turns slightly towards the right bringing the racket at waist level. The arm is slightly bent. The front* counterclockwise movement of the right hand starts from this position. The racket makes contact with the top of the ball and this is done at the beginning of the ball's ascent after it bounces. The angle formed by the racket with the table surface at the time of contact is approximately 50°. The body weight falls slightly forwards helping the execution of the movement. The whole movement is done very quickly due to the characteristics of the stroke.
* The forward direction of the arm in this stroke is more intense compared to other forehand topspins.
