It was the best celebration of the whole Central American and Caribbean Games, in fact the best of the year and possibly the Millennium; 28 year old Iizzwa Medina beat Venezuela’s Luisana Perez to book a place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Singles and jumped for joy like a five year old on an invisible pogo stick.
The victory over the very calm Luisana Perez on the evening of Thursday 29th July 2010 underlined the importance of the guaranteed bronze medal for Honduras; it was the third in all sports they had captured since the Games begin. Simply, the colour did not matter; it could have gold, silver or sky blue pink!
In Tears
“I just thank God I won, at the end of the match I was crying”, said Iizzwa Medina. “I’m so pleased for my sister, my mum, my dad, my family.”
Earlier in the week, I had spoken to IIzzwa Medina. “I’m so nervous”, she said. “I really want to do well.
Discussion
We had a short discussion and decided that perhaps the best way forward was think about three things: move to relax, concentrate on your technique and do not think about winning and losing.
Well I think she managed to get two out of three right!
“I tried to do everything you said, I tried to keep moving and I tried not think about winning or losing”, said Iizzwa Medina. “I didn’t play too well but I played with all my heart, I just fought and fought.”
Who Cares?
Iizzwa Medina did just that, the technique, especially from the forehand was perhaps not quite that of Zhang Yining.
Nevertheless, who cares, nobody in Honduras does!
Hair Loss
“My father has been so worried all week, he’s been losing his hair!”, smiled a perspiration ridden Iizzwa Medina. “I wanted to win so much, so much.”
Guts and sheer determination took Iizzwa Medina to victory. “Tomorrow I’ll try my best but I know it’s going to be really difficult; for me the bronze medal is gold.”
Semi-Finals
At the penultimate stage she faces the Dominican Republic’s Wu Xue who gave Colombia’s top seeded Paula Medina a sever lesson in the art of service, return of service and first attack. Wu Xue was a class apart, the techniques honed in the Chinese school of table tennis apparent.
Meanwhile, in the lower half of the draw, the second and third seeds meet; Venezuela’s Fabiola Ramos beat compatriot Ruaidda Ezzeddine to book her semi-final place whilst Mexico’s Yadira Silva accounted for Colombia’s Johana Araque.
