The inaugural ITTF-Oceania Cup will be staged at the Wayville Sports Centre in the Australian city of Adelaide from Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd July 2011.
A tournament which undoubtedly will be organised to the highest standards; it is a major opportunity to promote a regional event and create financial returns for all concerned. Most certainly it is a major step forward for Oceania.
Television coverage by Fox Sports has already been guaranteed in Australia with a total of A$20,000 (Australian Dollars) prize money for the event.
Successful Candidate
Following a bidding process KBL, a private company, emerged successful and chose Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia, as the home.
It is a selection supported by the International Table Tennis Federation, the Oceania Table Tennis Federation, TMS International and Table Tennis Australia.
Agreement
In the recent past the increase in commercial activities of the Oceania Table Tennis Federation has resulted in a long-term tripartite agreement between the International Table Tennis Federation, TMS International and the Oceania Table Tennis Federation being established.
The agreement enables the Oceania Table Tennis Federation to use the name and logo of the International Table Tennis Federation to enhance its brand and marketability. Therefore, for marketing purposes the Oceania Table Tennis Federation will be known as ITTF-Oceania and the International Table Tennis Federation brand is to be used within its events.
Increase Competitions
One of the key reasons ITTF-Oceania desired to use the ITTF name and logo was to increase the level of competitions within Oceania – no doubt attracting sponsors will be much easier when the regional and global brands are hand-in-hand. It is hoped that the pinnacle event within Oceania will be the ITTF-Oceania Cup, which will also help the Oceania Championships to grow. The two events will be the qualification tournaments inside Oceania for the World Cups and World Championships for Oceania athletes.
Steve Dainton
“We were very pleased with the bid from Adelaide, mainly because the company involved has the same goals as the ITTF and TMS International for the event; that is for every partner to be profitable”, said Steve Dainton, ITTF Marketing Director. “The continental agreements are a way to try and further commercialize the continental events and give the continents a further link with the ITTF; our commercial television and sponsorship partners are all demanding this and if we hope to take table tennis to a true global level; this is a very important step. For the first event in Oceania within this agreement, although will not be easy, we are doing all we can to make sure it is a real success and we are happy to now have KBL on board.”
Patrick Gillmann
Equally Patrick Gillmann, President of the Oceania Table Tennis Federation was delighted.
“ITTF-Oceania has already proved inside ITTF that it is a great continent with its own skills – we have the best development programme and we are the leader in conducting Olympic Solidarity courses; now we are the first continent to sign a contract with ITTF and TMS International to use the ITTF’s brand to create direct links between the two structures”, he said. “Our next goal is to organize high level events with ITTF standards; this will become reality in 2011 with the Oceania Cup through television broadcast, sponsors, and spectators and for sure with a financial benefit for all concerned parties. The train is on the rails for a new period of table tennis within Oceania.”
John Matovinovic
A delighted President and KBL owner, John Matovinovic, was also upbeat. “! am very happy to be a part of the 2011 Oceania Cup, this event can be a dream come true in terms of commercial opportunities for all concerned and for the athletes of Oceania”, he enthused. “It will be marketed and presented as a table tennis extravaganza that in turn has the potential to take table tennis within Oceania to the masses’.
Matters are definitely heading in the right direction for ITTF-Oceania and the 2011 ITTF-Oceania Cup is very much a big part of the recent progress.
