We are counting hours before the start of the top European ranking tournament LEBHERR Europe Top-12. Like year before, Burg-Wächter Castello in Dusseldorf will be the venue for the duels between the best players at the Old Continent.
Same like year before the top favorite for the crown will be home crowd favorite Timo BOLL. However it will be the first time that Germany will have seven representatives at the Event.
In Frankfurt 2004 host nation has six representatives; two days ago that record was equalized, but with withdrawal of Michael MAZE Germany rewrites the history books. Last time when some nation was that dominate was in 1979 when for Hungary in Sweden’s Christianstad played JONYER, GERGELY, TAKACS, KREISZ, and girls SZABO, OLAH and MAGOS.
Germany also equals the record of five male players that Sweden set in Italian Arezzo when WALDNER lead the team that includes names of KARLSSON, LINDH, PERSSON and APPELGREN.
The same number of male participants was at the first Event held in Zadar in Yugoslavia. That event was experimental and host nation had five players in men’s Event: STIPANCIC, SURBEK, KARAKASEVIC, KORPA and CORDAS.
Speaking about numbers, player with the most participation so far is Jorgen PERSSON with 16, followed with Zoran PRIMORAC and Vladimir SAMSONOV with 14. At the list there are also the participants who will feel the heat of Top-12 for the first time. For Germans Patric BAUM, Christian SUSS and Bastian STEGER in men’s and Ruta PASKAUSKIENE of Lithuania in women’s event it will be the premiere.
BAUM, STEGER and SUSS were the member of the team that won the gold medal at the European Championships in Stuttgart and St Petersburg. In addition, BAUM won gold at the Junior World Championships in Linz 2005.BAUM and STEGER started this season with the silver in the Doubles Event at the Slovenian open in Velenje. SUSS was also in the winning team at the European championships in Germany, Russia, and Serbia and has three doubles titles from that three Championships.
Ruta PASKAUSKIENE was the member of Lithuanian Olympic team in Beijing, Sydney and Atlanta, and won the gold in Singles Event in St. Petersburg but it will be her first TOP-12 in career. The draw for the event will be held today in Burg-Wächter Castello hall at 7PM.
