A new name on the roll of honour is a possibility; that is the scenario for the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup to be staged in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th September 2010.
Only one player can prevent that possibility; the player in question is Guo Yan.
She is the one and only previous winner of the event who is amongst the 19 players who have confirmed their participation in the tournament.
Won in Urumqi
Guo Yan won the title in the Chinese city of Urumqi beating Zhang Yining in the final and thus prevented the latter securing a hat-trick of titles.
The reigning Olympic and World champion won in 2004 in Hangzhou and in 2005 in Guangzhou.
Intercontinental Cup
Once again matters will commence with the Intercontinental Cup which will comprise Canada’s Zhang Mo, Mexico’s Yadira Silva, Congo Brazzaville’s Yang Fen and New Zealand’s Karen Li; they are the representatives from the continents of North America, Latin America, Africa and Oceania.
The winner of the Intercontinental Cup joins the remaining 15 players for the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup.
Guo Yue Searching for One Place Higher
China’s Guo Yue, the runner up in 2009, is the Asian representative with Germany’s Wu Jiaduo, the reigning European champion completing the continental requisite line up.
Defending champion, Liu Shiwen will not compete in the event; therefore, Singapore’s Feng Tianwei is the top seed with Guo Yan, the second highest world listed player in action.
Completing Line Up
Korea’s Kim Kyung Ah and Park Mi Young, Singapore’s Wang Yuegu, Hong Kong’s Jiang Huajun and Tie Yana plus Japan’s Ai Fukuhara and Sayaka Hirano complete the list of players eligible by world ranking with Hungary’s Krisztina Toth and Poland’s Natalia Partyka receiving the two wild cards from the International Table Tennis Federation.
