LIEBHERR Table Tennis European Championships will be held in Ostrava's CEZ Arena from 11th to 19th September with participation of 298 players. There are 39 teams in Men’s Teams Event and 34 in Women’s, whilst singles entries includes 167 names in Men’s and 131 in Women’s category.
During the Championships there will be 92 referees. Czech Table Tennis Federation waited for the top table-tennis event nearly for a quarter century. The last one took place in 1986 in Prague.
Unfortunately reigning champion Michael MAZE of Denmark will not be able to defend his title. In the eve of the Championships he was forced to withdraw due the problems with the injury.
However, on the starting list of the European Championships there are names of a lot of table tennis stars – such as the name of the second player at the world rankings German Timo BOLL, a former World champion from Austria Werner SCHLAGER, three-time European champion Vladimir SAMSONOV from Austria and double Paralympics champion in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Natalia PARTYKA.
The reigning champions are Germany and Netherlands in Men’s and Women’s Teams Event, as well as Michael MAZE of Denmark and WU Jiaduo of Germany in Singles Event. In Men’s Doubles BOLL and SUSS of Germany won the title in Stuttgart, whilst in Women’s Doubles SAMARA and DODEAN of Romania succeeded.
The competition will be held in CEZ Arena with capacity of 7.000 spectators. Ceska televize (Czech Television) as a main media partner will broadcast live daily couple of hours. The Organizing Committee offers tickets for the audience with several price levels. Tickets sale is via company Ticketstream (www.ticketstream.cz).
"We found an excellent background for the European Championships in Ostrava with an excellent terms and conditions in organization after last year's European Junior Championships in Prague. We wish we could declare after the Championships to the European Table Tennis Union that here we made one of the best championships ever, " said Zdenek BOTEK, the chairman of the Czech Table Tennis Association.
