Brave efforts but for those who had been required to negotiate the qualification stage of the Men’s Singles event at the Harmony China Open in Suzhou, the second round, completed on Friday 20th August 2010, saw the end of the road.
In the lower half of the draw, the names of five qualifiers appeared; none of those name appear in the third round.
Chinese Taipei’s Wu Chih-Chi, England’s Paul Drinkhall, Hungary’s Janos Jakab plus the Korean duo of Jung Young Sik and Kim Min Seok all experienced defeat.
Seniority Prevailed
Other than for the defeat of 24 year old Janos Jakab by 20 year old Xu Xin, the no.6 seed, it was the more experienced player who succeeded.
Seeded no.2, Germany’s Timo Boll used his fast attacking style of play to good effect to beat Kim Min Seok whilst Ma Lin, the no.3 seed, the master in the art of service and return was too clever for Wu Chih-Chi.
Equally, matching the efforts of compatriot Timo Boll, Dimitrij Ovtcharov held the aces against Jung Young Sik; whilst Chen Qi, oozing talent, proved that few degrees too fast for England’s Paul Drinkhall.
According to Plan
Quite, simply matters went according to plan and that was the situation in the remaining contests in the lower half of the Men’s Singles draw.
Tang Peng, the no.13 seed, remaining close to the table at every opportunity, defeated Korea’s Kim Jung Hoon whilst the latter’s compatriot, Joo Se Hyuk, seeded no.8, combined defence a ferocious attack, to beat Hong Kong’s Jiang Tianyi.
Fast Racket
Success for Joo Se Hyuk and success for his Korean colleague, Ryu Seung Min; seeded no.14, he beat Russia’s Fedor Kuzmin.
The new glue regulations may mean that the racket of Ryu Seung Min is a slower than when he won gold at the Olympic Games in Athens but I wonder, is Fedor Kuzmin of the same view?
Ryu Seung Min dominated matters. He won in four straight games.
