Table tennis equipment - Blade and rubbers choise |
There are simply 2 pieces of equipment to consider when choosing a new bat. This is an easy to follow, informative section designed for you the player as a helpful guide.
Which is the right blade for you? Think about how you play generally and make some notes. Players often first identify and place most importance on their best shot ( i.e. a great forehand smash!) This is fine, however you should consider how often the opportunity to play that shot materialises? The amount of opportunities to play that great forehand is likely to be quite low! Evaluate your complete game from a percentage viewpoint and you will probably realise that you play more basic strokes i.e. push, block, counter hit and that all important 'return of service'. The point here is to remember to consider all aspects of your game. Remember the blade will also modify how the rubber plays. So study the blade performance descriptions carefully before selecting.
Which is the right rubber for you? If everyone had the same game, only one type of rubber would be made. Use your notes again and approach both forehand and backhand with the same analysis as you did for your blade choice. Carefully read rubber descriptions and consider the benefits they could bring (i.e. more control, more spin or more speed.) The rubbers performance characteristics will vary depending on a player's style, timing, ability and blade used. Most players do not use the same rubber on both wings, often choosing different types with different sponge thicknesses to maximise their overall game style.
