One of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, Haiti in recent years has struggled with problems ranging from political upheaval, health crises, severe environmental troubles and an annual barrage of hurricanes.
Furthermore, on Tuesday 12th January 2010, the country was hit by the worst earthquake in the region for over 200 years; a death total currently estimated at over 300,000.
Yet despite all the difficulties, the spirit is willing and table tennis continues to strive.
Caribbean Championships
“Last week the Association Haïtienne de Tennis de Table sent a team to the 52th Caribbean Senior Championships that took place in San German, Puerto Rico, from Sunday 4th to Saturday 10th July 2010”, explained Herold Francois, International Coordinator for the Association Haïtienne de Tennis de Table.
Furthermore, it was a landmark occasion.
First Entry
“It was Haiti, a first time participation at this competition”, continued Herold Francois. “All the other countries participating gave Haiti a warm welcome that is quite memorable; the President of the Puerto Rico Federation, Mr. Ivan Santos Ortega, went the extra mile to make us comfortable; our delegation is, sincerely appreciative for the attention.”
Certainly it is a busy time for Ivan Santos, Puerto Rico is due to host the Cental American and Caribbean Games during the last week of July.
Tremendous Effort
“Our players, Georges Matin, current champion, Mario Pyram, Fabrice Joseph, Esaie Termonfils, coached by our National Technical Director, Mozart Francois gave their best”, added Herold Francis. “They played their hearts out but unfortunately none progressed beyond the preliminary stage.”
Defeat but defeat with honour and the efforts of the Haiti team were recognized.
Performance Recognised
“At the closing ceremony a Plaque was offered to the Association Haïtienne de Tennis de Table for its first participation to the tournament”, concluded Herold Francois. “The Haiti Sports Ministry, La Ministère de la Jeunesse des Sports et de l’action Civique, facilitated the participation; it was a great moment for Haiti, historic. “
Not only was it a great moment, it was a brave venture and underlines yet again, as has been seen so many times in history, the resilience of the human race; strong in the face of adversity.
